Hobbies and Interests

What Happens After Hours?

Apart from all the marketing, researching and strategizing that happens during office hours, I do in fact have a variation of interests and hobbies that I enjoy in my spare time. Once I have satisfied at least 3 tiers of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, I like to enjoy the following:

After marketing, travel is one of my biggest loves and strongest passions. It is an interest I would like to pursue as frequently as possible during the limited time I have on earth. I am extremely attracted to the rich cultures and the natural beauties the various this world has to offer. I strongly believe that wisdom comes from experience, so I intend to absorb and experience as much as I can.

So far, I have traveled to 11 different countries, which equates to around only 5% of the world.

  1. South Africa
  2. Mauritius
  3. Qatar
  4. United Arab Emirates
  5. Thailand
  6. Spain
  7. Turkey
  8. Greece
  9. Italy
  10. Vatican City (classified as an independent country – the smallest in the world – within the city of Rome, believe it or not!)
  11. Monaco

I studied culinary arts and trained as a chef while still at school, which was a load of fun. I like the challenge of mastering a complex dish – the process of finding an exciting new meal, locating the ingredients, following the recipe, sometimes experimenting a little, and (hopefully) creating a delicious masterpiece. Not only is it highly satisfying and therapeutic, but being a feeble human who relies on food for survival, makes it a rather a practical skill to have! On the flip side, I must confess that I also love trying out new cuisine and delicacies prepared for me by others.

I get great satisfaction out of problem solving and building things, which I find coding and programming is all about. I would definitely classify myself as a novice at this point, but am determined to expand my knowledge and practical experience in this field. I have covered the fundamentals of HTML and CSS, as well as the basics of designing and building a website – this website itself is a product of my learning. I am currently delving into Javascript and PHP and am hoping to cover these 2 languages adequately before attempting any others. My learning is being done through online self-study, free coding courses on Codecademy, paid courses on Team Treehouse, and lastly, by attending various talks and events about programming and web development.

I am an absolute bookworm. At any point in time I will be in the middle of some or other book, often two at once. My favourite genres are science, non-fiction, comedy/drama (aka “dramedy”) and the occasional fantasy novel. These are some of my favourite books of all time:

Bad Science
Ben Goldacre

The Diary of a Young Girl
Anne Frank

Flowers for Algernon
Daniel Keyes

Smoking Ears & Screaming Teeth
Trevor Norton

The Hobbit
J.R.R Tolkien

Neuroscience and Biology

I have an endless fascination with the physical components of the human body. Knowing the detail of our anatomy and understanding the functional operations of the body is of such high value and interest to me.

Having an interest in technology is basically a pre-requisite for working in digital. Online marketing is constantly evolving as the times change. The methods and mechanisms we use need to adapt with the digital evolution and marketers need to find new opportunities and innovate marketing as we know it. Personally, I try to keep up with trends as well as try out any new innovations or products that I can get my hands on.
